Regular Season Ends in Sweep at UNM

ALBUQUERQUE -- The BYU women's softball team finished the regular season losing both game of a doubleheader to New Mexico 7-8, 2-6, Saturday. The loses drop the Cougars to 29-21, 6-10 and the Cougars fall to fifth place for the MWC Tournament hosted in Provo next Thursday through Saturday at Gail Miller Field.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Lobos jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Cougars responded with a run in the third followed by one in the fourth to bring the score to 4-2. New Mexico scored in the fourth and BYU responded with two runs in the fifth to bring the score to 5-4. Sabrina Sandberg of New Mexico responded with her second home run of the game to extend the Lobo lead to 8-4. BYU made a rally of their own with three runs in the seventh, but were unable to complete the comeback and lost 8-7.

Oli Keohohou finished the game 2-3 with two runs and a walk. Junior Brooke Cadiente finished the game 2-4 with two RBI. Lauren Watson, Kate Walker, and Kari Pringle also finished the game going 2-4 from the plate. Freshman Niki Andersen (8-) took the loss in four innings on the mound.

In the second game, New Mexico took a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning. The Cougars scored two in the top of the sixth to bring the lead within one, but New Mexico answered with three runs of their own to seal the win 6-2.

Sophomore Ariel Capra (9-5) took the loss in six innings on the mound. Senior outfielder Liz VanderLinden went 2-3 from the plate with one run scored. Seniors Liz Boydston and Pringle went 1-3 with one RBI a piece.

"We're looking to starting our second season, the post season, this weekend at home," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "We need to play consistently in both hitting and pitching."

The MWC Tournament will take place at Gail Miller Park in Provo, May 9-11. The cost for a three-day pass is 15 dollars for adults and 10 dollars for students, seniors, and children under 18 years of age. For a one-day pass the cost is eight dollars for adults and five dollars for students, seniors, and children under 18.
