Cougars Stay Alive by Beating UNLV 6-2

PROVO -- In game six of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Tournament, the host BYU Cougars eliminated No. 3 UNLV 6-2. The Cougars are now 30-22 with the win and advance to play No. 1 seed San Diego State at 7 p.m. The Rebels finish the season 30-34.

In the bottom of the third inning, BYU loaded the bases with no outs as shortstop Kate Walker walked to get on, followed by singles from Megan Johnson and outfielder Liz VanderLinden. On a routine throw to first base, UNLV mishandled the throw and allowed throw and allowed Walker and Johnson to score. Sophomore Oli Keohohou brought home seniors VanderLinden and Pringle with a single down the first base line to help the Cougars build a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, UNLV threatened to score with bases loaded with one out, but freshman Niki Andersen struck out two batters to end the inning. In the same inning, senior Liz Boydston lined one down the left line for an RBI double to score Johnson.

The Rebels got things going in the fifth inning as shortstop Amber Campbell hit a double to start the inning. Arica Painter brought her home with an RBI single to put the first run for the Rebels to make the score 5-1. UNLV tacked on one more run in the sixth inning as Melissa Inouye brought home MWC Player of the Year Geney Orris to tighten the gap 5-2.

VanderLinden hit her fifth triple of the season in the sixth inning, giving her the lead in the conference for triples. Pinch hitter Jill Roberts brought home VanderLinden to make the score 6-2 after six.

"Our team did what they had to do to win," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "Our seniors stepped up for us and gave us some key hits."

Andersen (9-9) picked up the win in four innings striking out eight while allowing only one run. Junior Cynthia Fallowfield picked up her second save of the season striking out four in three innings. Jackie Kerrigan (9-15) picked up the loss for UNLV.
