Going 3-1 last week after falling to No. 2 UCLA before sweeping a series with Pacific, BYU took both weekly WCC awards as Tristen Turlington earned Player of the Week honors and Kaysen Korth was named Pitcher of the Week.
The awards marked the seventh and eighth time that the Cougars have earned a weekly conference honor, with Turlington the fourth different freshman to receive an award this season.
Turlington hit .462 for the week with three home runs and eight RBIs. She launched a grand slam in game one of the series and walked-off game two with a three-run shot to help BYU past the Tigers on Friday night.
Korth appeared in three of BYU’s four games, starting two of them and posting a 2-1 record with a 1.11 ERA. The freshman struck out 14, while giving up just two hits, including a no earned runs and five strikeout performance against the Bruins.
The Cougars had five batters finish the week with slugging percentage of 1.000 or better: Huntyr Ava (1.500), Mallory Barber (1.333), Turlington (1.231), Violet Zavodnik (1.000) and Alexis Gilio (1.000).
BYU and Saint Mary’s are set to face off for the 10th time as members of the same conference and ninth time in WCC play. The Cougars and Gaels first series against each other came in 2013 when the two teams were members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
Saint Mary’s (18-28, 7-5 WCC)
- The Gaels went 1-3 last week after dropping a doubleheader at Fresno State before splitting one with Sacramento State
- Saint Mary’s earned a series win at Pacific the week prior
- Outside of WCC play, the Cougars and Gaels share a few common opponents: Utah Tech, Utah State, Idaho State and Boise State
- Sonja Garnett is in year five as head coach at Saint Mary’s, posting a 68-138-1 record since 2019
- BYU leads the all-time series between the two teams, 30-2, and has swept the last two series
Following their regular season finale at SMC, the Cougars will await their postseason fate with Sunday night's Selection Show airing on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. MDT.
