Turlington, Korth sweep weekly WCC awards

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Freshmen Tristen Turlington and Kaysen Korth swept the West Coast Conference's weekly awards, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Starting all four of BYU's games this week at second base or designated player, Turlington was named the WCC Player of the Week after hitting .462, slugging 1.231 and recording an on-base percentage of .500. Coming into the week with no home runs and just seven RBI on the season, the freshman hit three over the fence and recorded eight RBI during the Cougars Friday night doubleheader sweep of Pacific.

In game one, Turlington sent a solo shot over the scoreboard in right field. Following a rain delay, she went opposite field again, launching a grand slam to right-center field, helping fuel the run-rule victory for BYU. As the nightcap went to extra innings, Turlington became the hero of game two, hitting a towering, 3-run shot to left field as the Cougars walked it off in the ninth inning with a 6-3 victory.

Korth earned WCC Pitcher of the Week honors after going 2-1 this week, posting a 1.11 ERA in 12 2/3 innings pitched. The freshman gave up just three hits and two runs across 9 1/3 of work against WCC foe Pacific, striking out nine Tigers for a total of 14 strikeouts on the week. Korth went the distance in the Cougars' game one victory over Pacific, while also going 3 1/3 against No. 2 UCLA earlier in the week, giving up no earned runs and fanning five Bruins in the start.

This is the Cougars' seventh and eighth weekly honor of the season, with Turlington becoming the fourth different freshman to receive a conference award in 2023. It is Korth's third Pitcher of the Week award this year.

BYU will conclude its regular season slate with a three-game set at Saint Mary's on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. All three games will be streamed on the WCC Network.
