Agbayani earns WCC Pitcher of the Week honors
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Freshman Ailana Agbayani was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The starting shortstop pitched a total of eight innings in relief for BYU this week, including 4 1/3 of scoreless ball at LSU's Purple & Gold Challenge. Agbayani earned the win in the Cougar's mid-week game at Utah Tech earlier in the week, giving up just two runs while going 3 2/3 innings and fanning three Trailblazers.
In Baton Rouge, Agbayani was in the circle for the final three innings against NC State, striking out two batters and inducing a groundout to seal BYU's 1-0 win over the Wolfpack to conclude its trip to the Bayou.
The Mililani Mauka, Hawai'i native finished second on the team for the week with a .389 batting average and .421 on-base percentage, and also tallied 10 assists and seven putouts on a perfect fielding percentage.
This is the Cougars' fourth weekly honor of the season after freshman pitcher Kaysen Korth received the Pitcher of the Week award twice and senior third baseman Martha Epenesa earned the Player of the Week honor once. It is the first weekly WCC award of Agbayani's career.
BYU will next take the field in its conference-opening three-game series at Santa Clara on April 7-8.
