BYU falls to 0-3 at Mary Nutter with 4-1 loss to SDSU
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — BYU softball suffered its third-straight loss, falling to San Diego State, 4-1 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Complex late Friday night.
The Cougars (7-5, 0-0 WCC) recorded just two hits on the night, also committing four errors. Both teams scored once in the first inning, but a three-run fourth by the Aztecs was the difference in the game.
Player Highlights
- Kaysen Korth: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 7 K
- Ailana Agbayani: 1-3, R
- Hailey Morrow: 0-2, RBI
San Diego State sandwiched two singles with a groundout that moved the runner to second en route to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Aztecs got another single in the frame, but a quick throw by catcher Hailey Morrow to Martha Epenesa allowed BYU to tag the SDSU runner out at third base.
The Cougars loaded the bases in their half of the first as Ailana Agbayani reached on an Aztec error, Maddie Bejarano walked and Epensa singled through the left side. Morrow worked a four-pitch walk to bring home Agbayani and tie the game at 1-1, but BYU would leave the bases loaded as a strikeout on the ensuing at-bat ended the inning.
SDSU batted through the order in the fourth inning, recording two singles and drawing three walks to score three runs to take a 4-1 lead that would last the remainder of the game.
Struggling to get on base, the Cougars were retired in order in four of the seven innings, including the final three innings, with the third inning ending in a caught stealing-double play.
BYU will finish out its Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic slate with a 12:30 p.m. PST matchup against Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 25. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball.
