BYU finishes series vs. LMU with a 1-0 loss

PROVO, Utah — After splitting two games in a doubleheader the day before, BYU softball finished its series with Loyola Marymount with a close 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Gail Miller Field.

  • BYU held LMU scoreless through the first four innings 

The Cougars secured two early outs at the top of the first with a 6-3 double play from second to first. Starting pitcher Autumn Moffat-Korth and the BYU defense closed out the top of the first allowing no runs.

With a single by Violet Zavodnik to right field, followed by a run to second on a wild pitch, Huntyr Ava got a walk to first. With Cougars on first and second, Alyssa Podhurcak was up to bat. After a ground ball to left field, LMU got its third out, keeping the score 0-0 at the bottom of the first.

Moving into the second inning, the Cougars got three ground outs. The Cougars had three quick outs and LMU closed out the bottom of the second allowing no runs. 

The game was held scoreless through the third and fourth innings as LMU and BYU prepared for the final innings of the series.   

The Lions started the fifth inning with a double to left center, followed by a bunt. With a Cougar error, LMU secured its first run of the game, going up 1-0 in the top of the fifth. The bottom of the fifth ended with no runs for BYU as the Cougars trailed the Lions 1-0.

Moving into the sixth inning, LMU hit two singles to center field, putting players on first and second base. Despite getting players on two bases, BYU secured three outs to keep the score 1-0 at the top of the sixth. LMU held BYU scoreless at the bottom of the sixth, after only getting one player on base.

The Cougars secured three quick outs in the top of the seventh and final inning. Marissa Chavez walked to first to start the bottom of the seventh. Alexi Gilio went in for Chavez as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Despite having runners on second and third, the Cougars were not able to capitalize and lost the game 1-0.

Up next, the Cougars will face Dixie State University on Tuesday, April 12th at Gail Miller Field. The first pitch will begin at 1 pm MDT and can be streamed via the BYUtv app.
