BYU unable to hold off Stanford in 3-2 walk-off

STANFORD, Calif. – On the final day of the DeMarini Classic, the BYU softball team was unable to hold off Stanford, losing in a 3-2 walk-off on Saturday afternoon.

"We lost a heartbreaker again today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We played hard but couldn’t close it out in the seventh inning. My message to the team is while we may have lost it in the seventh inning, we could have won it during the entire game. We will learn and get tougher."

Going into the final half-inning, Stanford was behind 2-1. Two singles from the Cardinal put runners in scoring position. A Stanford double sealed the deal as both runners made it home and the Cardinal walked it off 3-2.

Despite going down in the first inning as the Cardinal got one across, BYU fought back to even the score 1-1. In the second frame, a single from Alyssa Podhurcak gave BYU momentum as the sophomore eventually scored on a single from Erin Miklus.

The Cougars took the lead in the fourth as Taryn Lennon crossed home on a groundout from Natalie Sicairos making the score 2-1.

Stanford closed out the game scoring two in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off 3-2.

BYU continues its tournament season traveling to Texas for a series of games against Sam Houston State, Texas State, UTSA, Texas and Tarleton State from March 10-13.
