SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Juniors Ashley Thompson and McKenna Bull swept the West Coast Conference weekly honors for the second time this season after sweeping Santa Clara at home this weekend.

Over four games played, Thompson hit .571, going 8 for 14 with 10 RBI. She hit three home runs, a triple and a double. She also stole two bases and had a perfect fielding percentage from first base. Her six RBI and six hits in the series against Santa Clara at home led BYU to a sweep over the three games, including two run-rule wins. When it was tied 3-3 in the opening game, she hit a home run to give the Cougars the 4-3 lead and the win. In the second game of the doubleheader, she had five RBI on three hits. On Saturday, she went 2 for 3 with three runs.

Following last week, Thompson leads the team in batting average (.411), hits (60), runs (42) and doubles (11) and is second in RBI (47) and home runs (11).

It was another record-breaking week for Bull. In the first game against Santa Clara, she threw 12 strikeouts to break the BYU single-season strikeout record, surpassing her own 2015 record of 256.  Her 2016 season total is now up to 266 after this weekend. In the final game against the Broncos, she led the Cougars from the circle with seven strikeouts. Bull notched two wins against Santa Clara to help keep her team in first place in the WCC. Over the week, she totaled 19 strikeouts with a 4.31 ERA and seven walks.

This is the second WCC Player of the Week honor for Thompson this season and the sixth WCC Pitcher of the Week honor for Bull. These two swept the weekly awards back on April 25, after sweeping the home series against Saint Mary’s.

The Cougars will next play at Utah State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. MDT. Live stats and streaming will be available on the BYU softball schedule page.
