BYU Softball closes out fall season with wins over UNLV
LAS VEGAS -- The offensive output over the weekend helped BYU softball close out its fall season with wins over UNLV 12-2 and 12-9 in a doubleheader Saturday.
The first game of the day saw the Cougars explode the game wide open in the third inning.
Leading 2-0 after two, BYU put up 10 runs in the frame led by the offensive performance of Sydney Broderick as she went 3-for-3 from the plate including a triple, a homerun and five RBI.
Sophomores Ashley Thompson and McKenzie St. Clair both contributed with two RBI apiece and pitcher McKenna Bull threw all five innings allowing only two hits and striking out seven.
The afternoon game was a closer contest.
BYU jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning and led 9-2 following the third. The Cougars took a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh and held off the Rebel rally to complete the sweep of the doubleheader.
Freshman Ashley Godfrey led the offense, driving in three RBI on 3-for-3 hitting. Sophomore Lauren Bell and senior Megan Arnold each added two RBI.
BYU softball commences its season Feb. 5-7 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona.
