O'Connor named WCC Player of the Week
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Redshirt freshman Mercedes O’Connor was named as the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after a strong showing against Loyola Marymount last week.
O’Connor did a little bit of everything at the plate to lead BYU to a sweep in a rain-shortened series against Loyola Marymount. O’Connor finished with a .625 average, seven RBI, two runs, two singles, a double, a triple and a home run.
With the first game tied 2-2 in the fourth, O’Connor hammered a two-run shot to center field through a strong wind to give the Cougars a lead they would not relinquish. In the next inning, O’Connor tripled into the right-field corner to score two more. She then batted in the game-ending run with a double to right center with one out in the sixth. O’Connor added two singles the next game, including a hard shot that ricocheted off the pitcher’s glove for two more RBI.
O’Connor is the fifth player to earn a WCC weekly award joining McKenzie St. Clair, Katie Manuma, Sydney Broderick and McKenna Bull.
Saint Mary's RHP Katie Moss was named as the WCC Pitcher of the Week after a complete game shutout and two saves against Santa Clara.
BYU will head to Ogden, Utah, to take on in-state rival Weber State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. MDT. BYU Radio will provide a live audio stream of the game.
