Freshmen lead BYU softball to victory
PROVO, Utah – Freshmen Ashley Thompson and McKenna Bull carried the BYU softball team to a 3-0 victory over Salt Lake Community College.
“It’s always nice to win,” head coach Gordon Eakin said. “We pitched well and played well defensively, but we left too many scoring opportunities on base. We just need to learn from those, grow and do better tomorrow.”
Thompson finished 2-3 with one home run and two RBIs and Bull pitched a complete game shutout, giving up one hit and 10 strikeouts.
Thompson broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the second with a towering home run down the left field line, bringing in junior Megan Arnold to put BYU ahead 2-0.
The Bruins looked to answer in the top of the third, loading the bases before Bull struck out the final two batters. In the bottom of the third, senior outfielder Carly Duckworth got a triple down the left field line to bring in senior Katie Manuma and give the Cougars the 3-0 lead.
The Cougars return to action with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. MDT against Snow College, followed by a game against Southern Utah.
