Five Named MWC Scholar Athletes

PROVO, Utah (June 28, 2011) – Five members of the men’s volleyball team have been honored as Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes. The award is given on a yearly basis for achievement in the classroom.

Recipients include senior Kevin Sagers, junior Quentin Smith and sophomores Cory Jones, Erik Mayer and Trevor Neff.

In order to qualify for the award, athletes must have attended two semesters at their institution, contribute significantly to an NCAA sponsored sport and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Sagers has been an asset to the team playing outside hitter for the past three seasons. He is particularly known for his killer serve with 22 aces in the 2010-2011 season. Sagers is an exercise science major with a 3.71 GPA and is from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Smith is a middle blocker from Sandy, Utah. This past season he saw significant playing time and had an attack percentage of .412 on the season. Smith has a 3.77 GPA and is studying finance.

The three sophomores all hail from California. Jones, a libero from Walnut Creek, is studying exercise science and maintains a 3.82 GPA.  Mayer, from Mission Viejo, upheld a 3.87 GPA in neuroscience in addition to playing middle blocker.  Neff, a setter from Camarillo, has a 3.73 GPA in pre-management.
