PALO ALTO -- In the semi-final match of the MPSF Tournament, the BYU men’s volleyball team (22-9) fell to Cal State Northridge (23-8) in five sets at Maples Pavilion Thursday night 3-2 (30-26, 25-30, 30-28, 16-30, 12-15).

"We came out with good enthusiasm, but we just couldn't keep the momentum going," BYU head coach Shawn Patchell said. "Northridge played well tonight and we just weren't in system to come out with a win tonight."

The Cougars were led by sophomore Robb Stowell with 18 kills, senior setter Reed Chilton with 52 assists and seven digs, senior libero Joel Silva with 12 digs and Andrew Stewart, Russell Lavaja and Futi Tavana with five blocks each.

With three players in double-digit kills from Stowell (18), Stewart (14), and Tavana (10), the Cougars were unable to come out with a win.

Cal State Northridge hit .274 as a team with three players tallying 15 kills and one with 16. The Matadors were led by Theo Edwards earning a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs. The Cougars only hit .165 for the five-set match.

Trading points until Kevin Sagers and Tavana helped the Cougars with a 3-0 run in the first set to gain the lead at 10-8 until the Matadors came back to knot the score at 15. Stowell next posted back-to-back kills to gain the lead for the rest of the set, Tavana finishing off the set with a kill at 30-26.

The second set found Edwards lethal for the Matadors, the Cougars unable to come back. Despite a 4-0 Cougar run ending at 20-22 with two kills from Stewart and a block by Tavana and Stewart, Northridge put the set away with a 3-0 run to end it 30-25.

The Cougars once again found themselves down in set three until Stowell came back off the bench to chalk up back-to-back kills to put the score at 20-22. Sagers tallied a kill next, forcing the Matadors to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, Otavio Souza and Sagers put up a double block to tie the score at 22. The Cougars came away with another win 30-28 with solid play by Stowell and Stewart and three-straight points with Souza back to serve.

The Matadors got up 6-2 to start out the fourth set, the Cougars unable to score two consecutive points until Mat Taylor came off the bench to earn a kill along with a Matador service error, 12-25. The Cougars next tallied a 3-0 run with a Northridge service error, a Stowell/Tavana block and a service ace from Lavaja before the Matadors came away with a 30-16 win, pushing the match to five sets.

In the fifth set both teams traded points until Lavaja helped the Cougars achieve a three-point lead off of two kills. Northridge came back to knot the score at nine after a couple BYU errors and three Matador kills. The score tied at nine, 10 and 12, the Matadors went on a 3-0 run to finish off the match with two BYU hitting errors, 15-12.
