Cardinal Attains Revenge, Sweeps BYU
STANFORD -- Just one night after winning a tough five-set match, the No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball team suffered a 3-0 sweep (30-24, 30-19, 30-19) courtesy of No. 5 Stanford Saturday night. With the loss the Cardinal now stands alone as the No. 4 team in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings with only one week in the regular season remaining.
Following Saturday’s loss the Cougars fall to 16-11 on the season and 12-8 against MPSF opponents.
Middle blocker Futi Tavana led BYU with 15 kills, tying his previous career-high. The redshirt freshman was the lone Cougar with double-digit kills. As a team BYU was out-hit by only one kill (45-44) but the difference-maker was attack percentage, with Stanford leading .386 to .138.
The Cardinal held an 18-13 lead in the first set before a service error aided the Cougars in notching three-consecutive points. Coming out of a timeout, Andrew Stewart and Tavana scored BYU’s only points as Stanford went on a 6-2 run. The Cougars were able to get within striking distance at 24-22, but four errors proved costly as the Cardinal picked up the 30-24 win.
BYU struggled to create any momentum in the second set, trailing the entire time as Stanford out-blocked and out-hit the Cougars. All it took was another 6-2 Cardinal run for the No. 5 team to go up two sets to none.
The Cougars’ struggles continued in the third set as they found themselves trailing 10-2 early. Back-to-back kills from Kent Tuttle and Otavio Souza helped close the Stanford lead to six points, but the momentum continued in the Cardinal’s favor. Another service error clinched the win for Stanford.
BYU closes out the regular season with a trip to league-leading Pepperdine for a pair of matches on April 16-17.
