Acosta Named MPSF Player of the Week
PROVO -- BYU outside hitter Joaquin Acosta was today named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after leading the then eight-ranked Cougars to a 2-1 record last week.
Acosta, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, tallied 67 kills on the week, averaging 5.15 kills per game, and added 16 blocks. Acosta picked up 19 kills in a 2-3 loss at Pacific, collected a team-high 18 kills in a 3-0 win over Stanford and recorded a career-high 30 kills in a 3-2 marathon victory at Hawai'i.
The 6-5 sophomore has reached double figures in kills in each of the Cougars' six matches this season and has produced a team-leading three double-double performances.
Acosta and the seventh-ranked Cougars are set to take on visiting Cal State Northridge on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, in the Smith Fieldhouse. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. (MST).
