BYU Win, Stanford Loss Leaves Cougars Only Unbeaten Team
PROVO -- With Stanford losing to Pepperdine, 3-2, earlier this afternoon, the BYU men's volleyball team remained the only unbeaten Division-I program in the country with a 3-0 win over UC San Diego on Saturday. The Cougars wasted little time recording its second straight three-game victory over UC San Diego in as many nights, 30-25, 30-15, 30-25. BYU improved to 7-0, 4-0, while UC San Diego dropped to 1-7, 0-6.
"It's clear to me we haven't played the kind of teams Stanford has to this point," BYU head coach Carl McGown said. "I really can't get too excited about our record until we play UCLA in a couple weeks, then go to Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara. When we start playing teams like that, then a perfect record would have some meaning."
Junior Joaquin Acosta led the Cougars with a match-high 13 kills on the night, while Jonathan Alleman turned in his second straight strong performance, notching 11 kills, five digs and two blocks. For the second straight match, BYU used a balanced offensive attack with 10 of its 12 players recording at least one kill, producing a .337 (49-16-98) average on the night. The Cougars held UC San Diego to a .109 average, allowing just 37 kills on 101 swings with 26 errors.
"It's nice to have a chance to get everyone some reps," McGown said. "We ended up playing with some combinations that weren't very productive, especially in game three. We'll just have to take satisfaction in our performance in games one and two."
After forcing BYU to commit seven attack errors and hit just .159 in game three, the Tritons climbed back to trail just 27-25. However sophomore Todd Clevenger recorded back-to-back kills, propelling the Cougars on to a 30-25 victory. The win gave BYU its sixth three-game victory in seven matches this season.
Donald Chen tallied a team-leading 10 kills for UCSD, while Griffin Cogorno notched nine kills, four blocks and eight digs.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, playing host to Cal Baptist. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. (MST) in the Smith Fieldhouse where BYU has now won seven straight matches, dating back to April 7, 2000.
