BYU men's volleyball picks up No. 2 overall seed in 2021 NCAA Tournament

PROVO, Utah —  BYU has received the No. 2 seed and a bye to the semifinal in the 2021 NCAA Division I/II men’s volleyball championship May 6-8. 

The seven-team field will compete entirely in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by The Ohio State University. Opening round matches will take place May 3 and 4, with the championship taking place May 6-8.

Semifinal matches will be streamed on NCAA.com and the championship match will be televised live on ESPNU. 

The Cougars secured the automatic bid after taking down Pepperdine to win the 2021 MPSF conference championship. With the bye to the semifinal, BYU will play its first game May 6 at 8 pm EST. 

Penn State (21-3) and Belmont Abbey (15-7) will face each other in a play-in match to begin the tournament. The winner of that match will face and Lewis (20-2) in the first round. The winner of that match will face BYU in the second round.

Penn State received their automatic tournament bid after winning the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Belmont Abbey is making their tournament debut with an automatic bid from winning the Conference Carolinas. Lewis, the winner of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, secured their eighth overall tournament appearance.

This is the 10th tournament appearance for the Cougars and their first since a 2018 NCAA tournament semifinal run. BYU has reached the national championship seven of their nine appearances in the tournament and the Cougars have three national championships from 1999, 2001, and 2004.
