Cougars Hold No. 1 Spot in National Poll

Number one week three ranking

LEXINGTON Ky. — For the third week in a row, the NVA/AVCA Division I/II coaches poll named BYU men’s volleyball the No. 1 team in the country.

The first place voting was split 8-8 out of 16 votes between BYU and the University of Hawaii. BYU is 1-1 overall, with UH not having played any matches yet. UC Santa Barbara (0-0) has taken over the No. 3 spot in front of Lewis (6-1) who is No. 4.

BYU began its 2021 season last weekend splitting a two-match series with UCLA. UCLA beat the Cougars in the Smith Fieldhouse for the first time since 2009, which was good enough to move the Bruins to No. 6 in the rankings.

BYU Head Coach Shawn Olmstead and the Cougars will look to hold on to the No. 1 spot against No. 7 Pepperdine (2-0) in back-to-back matches in the Fieldhouse this Friday and Saturday. Pepperdine’s two wins were against fellow MPSF opponent,Concordia Irvine Jan. 25 and 27. The Waves' Feb. 4 match at USC was postponed due to COVID-19 precautionary measures.
