No. 2 BYU to face Mount Olive for first time

PROVO, Utah – No. 2 BYU men’s volleyball will play Mount Olive for the first time in program history as the two teams will compete in a pair of matches Jan. 17-18 at Kornegay Arena in Mt. Olive, North Carolina.

BYU Game Notes

The first matchup between the Cougars and the Trojans will take place on Friday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. EST and the second match will be the following day on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. EST. Neither game will be televised or streamed, but live stats will be available for those wanting to follow along.

BYU defeated four ranked opponents to start the season 4-0 and moved up one spot to No. 2 in this week’s AVCA Coaches Poll. Mount Olive will enter its home opener this weekend with a 4-1 record while recording sweeps in its last four matches.

With two wins this weekend, the Cougars would be off to their best start to a season since 2008 when BYU won its first 12 matches.

The Cougars currently rank fifth in the NCAA in both hitting percentage (.356) and kills per set (12.93). Opposite hitter Gabi Garcia Fernandez is second in the NCAA in points per set (5.61), fifth in aces per set (.786) and seventh in kills per set (4.29). After receiving his second MPSF weekly award in a row, outside hitter Davide Gardini is fourth in points per set (5.29), fifth in kills per set (4.57) and eighth in hitting percentage (.476).
