Fernandez named Off the Block National Freshman of the Week

PROVO, Utah – BYU opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez has been named the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week, the organization announced Monday.

Fernandez helped BYU men’s volleyball come back from a loss on Friday to sweep UC Santa Barbara in the second match of the series on Saturday.

In the loss, Fernandez had a match-high 12 kills to go with five digs (one shy of the match high) and two blocks (one shy of the team high).

Then, in the win, he had a career-high 18 kills (in a three-set match) while hitting at a career-high .517 clip. He also added eight digs in the sweep, second-most in the match.

The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week is presented each week during the regular season to the NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball freshman who had the most outstanding performance.

This is the second time this season that Fernandez has been named Off the Block’s National Freshman of the Week.
