Sander named AVCA Player of the Week

PROVO, Utah – After earning conference player of the week as well as Off the Block National Freshman of the Week honors, BYU outside hitter Brenden Sander was named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Player of the Week for helping the No. 6 Cougars upset top-ranked Hawai’i in consecutive nights last week.

The award is the first of Sander’s career and the 25th overall for BYU (17-9, 14-8 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).

Sander contributed 30 kills on a .400 clip to go along with 13 digs and seven blocks in back-to-back wins. His five blocks on Friday were a career high as were his 16 kills and 10 digs on Saturday.

The wins secured the Cougars the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. BYU travels to No. 4 seed USC Saturday at 7 p.m. PDT for its quarterfinal match.
