Men's volleyball receives second seed in NCAA tournament

PROVO, Utah—BYU men’s volleyball secured the No. 2 seed in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships, receiving a bye into the Thursday semifinals.

BYU (21-8) will play the winner of third seed Stanford (22-8) and sixth seed Erskine (21-6) Thursday at 7 p.m. EDT. The Cougars defeated Stanford Saturday in three sets for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament title.

Loyola Chicago, which will host the national championships, received the No. 1 seed after going 27-1 this season. The Cougars lost to the Ramblers in their first match of the 2014 season at Loyola. Loyola will play the winner of fourth seed Lewis (23-7) and fifth seed Penn State (24-6).

The semifinal matches will be streamed on NCAA.com, with ESPNU broadcasting the final match Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT.

The play-in matches will be held Tuesday, with Stanford and Erskine playing at 7 p.m. EDT and Lewis and Penn State playing at 9 p.m. EDT.

BYU, Loyola, Penn State and Erskine all received automatic bids for winning their respective conference championships. Lewis and Stanford received the two at-large bids after finishing second in their league tournaments.
