Kawka falls in final of Southern California Championships
LOS ANGELES – After a riveting tournament run, BYU’s Patrick Kawka narrowly fell to No. 3 seed Clay Thompson of UCLA, 7-5, 6-4, in the singles final of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Monday in Los Angeles.
“I felt like I played pretty good throughout the tournament,” sophomore Patrick Kawka said. “I was happy to see some of the improvements that I’ve been making this year.”
Kawka, who is ranked No. 53 nationally, compiled an 11-5 record during fall play.
BYU had a strong presence at the tournament with No. 5 seed senior Georgy Batrkov and freshman Keaton Cullimore, along with Kawka, reaching the quarterfinals of the singles draw.
Batrakov and Kawka reached the doubles semifinals but did not compete due to BYU’s policy of not playing on Sunday.
