First day of Southern California Championships

LOS ANGELES – Three Cougars fell in the singles qualifying rounds during the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The BYU men’s tennis team continues to be represented in the tournament with Cougars competing in the singles main draw and the doubles qualifying rounds Thursday.

Advancing on a bye, freshman Francis Sargeant faced Chapman Chan in the Round of 32 during the singles qualifying rounds. Sargeant pushed Chan to three sets but was unable to top the UC San Diego player, falling 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Sophomore Travis Fillmore recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over UC San Diego’s Max Jigante to advance to the Round of 32 where he fell to Luis Gastao of UC Riverside in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 6-0, 10-4.

Freshman David Doehring fought his own three-set match against UCLA’s Evan Lee in the Round of 64, where he battled his way to a 6(5), 6-4, 10-6 victory. Doehring went on to face UC San Diego’s Devon Sousa in the Round of 32 but was unable to advance with a 6-4, 6-2 loss.

No. 5 seed senior Georgy Batrakov and sophomore Patrick Kawka begin tournament action Thursday in the singles main draw.

Both BYU doubles teams competing in the qualifying rounds received a first round bye. The duos of freshman Keaton Cullimore and Sargeant, and Doehring and Fillmore will begin competition Thursday in the Round of 16.

Batrakov and Kawka begin doubles action Friday as the No. 4 seed.
