Freshman, Assistant Coach Earn Region Awards

PROVO, Utah -- Continuing a season of great success and hard-earned honors, No. 112 Patrick Kawka and BYU men’s tennis assistant coach Zack Warren received ITA Mountain Region accolades Thursday.

No. 112 Kawka received the Mountain Region Rookie of the Year award after winning MWC Freshman of the Year April 27. Kawka has an overall singles record of 31-9 and is 22-12 on the season in doubles with senior Evan Urbina.

Warren, a former member of the No. 35 BYU men’s tennis team, was named Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He began as assistant coach for BYU in 2009. He helped coach the Cougars to two regular-season conference championships, a win in the MWC Tournament and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Warren graduated from BYU with a bachelors degree in communications and a business minor.

“I’m delighted for Zack,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “He’s very deserving of the honors. He’s done a terrific job the last two years, helping us to a 12-0 conference record. I’m delighted to see him get the recognition he has earned. I’m also very happy for Patrick. He had a great record and has a solid national ranking with several solid wins this year.”

The Cougars are in Los Angeles this weekend getting ready to compete against No. 31 San Diego Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match begins at 11 a.m. and the winner will play Saturday at noon.
