No. 36 Netters Head to MWC Tournament

PROVO, Utah -- The No. 36 BYU men’s tennis team, who just completed its second consecutive 6-0 conference season, will play in the semifinal match of the Mountain West Conference tournament Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The Cougars, the No. 1 seed of the tournament, compete against San Diego State after a bye in the quarterfinals.

Georgy Batrakov leads the Cougars in singles and doubles, recording a 20-3 singles record and 13-2 doubles record with Thomas Shubert. No. 109 freshman Patrick Kawka earned a 29-9 record in singles in the regular season. With team captain Evan Urbina, Kawka is 21-11 in doubles. Spencer Smith, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, holds a 22-6 singles record.

BYU defeated the Aztecs 5-2 during conference play. Prior to league competition, BYU shut down the Aztecs 6-1 in the ITA Kick-off Weekend.

The Aztecs are 5-15 overall, 2-4 in conference play.

All MWC tournament matches will be played at the University Tennis Complex at Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. The final match will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday.
