Cougars to battle in Southern California Championships

LOS -- Gearing up for their final stand in the fall season, the BYU men’s tennis team will participate in the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships this weekend.

Freshmen Patrick Kawka and Tyler Loong, and Roman Warias will compete in the qualifying rounds starting Wednesday morning. The athletes must win two games in the qualifying rounds to advance to the main draw that begins Thursday.

Kawka is set to play Ryan McNamara of Concordia and Loong will play Evan Jurgensen of UCSB. Warias will compete against Sam Ling of UCSD.

The Cougars will face players from all over California in the tournament, including UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine.

Seeded No. 5 in the tournament, Evan Urbina skips the qualifying rounds to start Thursday in the main draw.

Doubles actions also starts Thursday with qualifying rounds. Loong and Warias will team up in qualifying to battle Jan Guler and McNamara of Concordia.

Kawka and Urbina skip doubles qualifying and will play Friday.
