Shubert, Doerr Named Conference Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU tennis swept the conference awards this week. Thomas Shubert was honored as Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Kristina Doerr shared the recognition for the women with Utah’s Anastasia Putilina. This is the first time either player has received the title.

This is the third consecutive week an athlete from BYU has been named player of the week on the men’s side. Shubert’s honor marks the seventh time a BYU men’s tennis player has collected the award this year. This is the most any school has received in one season since the Mountain West Conference began in 2000. TCU also had seven players of the week in 2008.

Shubert, who hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, went a combined 4-0 last week to lead 32nd-ranked BYU to a 2-0 record against Air Force (W, 6-1) and New Mexico (W, 5-2). Against the Falcons, Shubert recorded a straight-sets victory over Austin Francis (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 2 singles spot, after teaming with senior Cassidy Mears to down Brett Rodgers and Taylor Soster (8-4) at the No. 1 doubles position. On Saturday, Shubert stayed perfect on the week by notching two more victories against the Lobos. Moving to the No. 1 singles spot, he defeated Ben Dunbar (6-3, 6-4), after teaming with Mears to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars with an 8-5 victory over Phil Anderson and Jadan Phillips.

Doerr, a product of Alpine, Utah, went a combined 4-0 last week to help BYU to a 1-1 record against No. 74 San Diego State (W, 5-2) and No. 29 UNLV (L, 3-4). In Thursday's MWC matchup against the Aztecs, Doerr downed 78th-ranked Alicia Aguilar (7-5, 6-2) at No. 2 singles, after teaming with sophomore McCall Jones to defeat Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison (8-2) at the top of the doubles lineup. Doerr capped off her perfect week by notching two more victories against the Rebels on Friday. She recorded a straight-sets victory over 111th-ranked Jana Albers (6-4, 6-4) at No. 2 singles, after teaming with Jones to beat UNLV's tandem of Albers and Kristina Nedeltcheva (8-3) at the No. 1 doubles position.

A native of Belgorod, Russia, Putilina went 3-1 last week to help Utah, ranked 39th in the latest edition of the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings, to a pair of victories against 29th-ranked UNLV (W, 4-3) and 74th-ranked San Diego State (W, 5-2). In Wednesday's Conference dual against the Rebels, Putilina defeated 37th-ranked Kristina Nedeltcheva (7-5, 6-3) at the top of the singles lineup, after teaming with freshman Paige Miles to down Nedeltcheva/Albers (9-8 (2)) at the No. 1 doubles spot. On Saturday, Putilina bounced back from a narrow doubles loss to beat another ranked singles opponent. After falling to San Diego State's doubles pair of Roxanne Ellison/Sierra Ellison (9-8 (2)), Putilina returned to the court to record a straight-sets victory over 50th-ranked Julia Trunk (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 1 singles position.
