HONOLULU -- After the final day of competition between men’s tennis players from BYU and the University of Hawaii, the Cougars came away with four-of-six doubles matches. The conclusion of the Hawaii Invitational marks BYU’s last tournament of the fall season.

“We have completed the fall season on an unbelievable high note,” BYU coach Brad Pearce said. “Everybody feels good about where we’re at right now.”

The two teams played only doubles in a round-robin format to wrap things up at the three-day tournament. Cassidy Mears and Thomas Shubert won both of their matches, first defeating Leo Rosenberg and Andreas Weber 8-5 and then sneaking past Rosenberg and Jeremy Tweedt 9-8.

Georgy Batrakov began the day paired with Roman Warias. The sophomores earned an 8-3 victory. Batrakov then combined with Daniel Hwang to edge out Craig Faulk and Daniel Llarenas.

Spencer Smith and Evan Urbina finished with two tough losses on the day. The pair fell 8-5 in its first match and 9-7 in the second.

“The guys showed that we are going to be a team that can contend with any team in the country at every single position,” Pearce said. “It was an incredibly positive week for all of the players.”

BYU will resume play in January when it begins the regular season.
