Albuquerque, N.M. (April 22, 2009) –Players from both the BYU men’s and women’s tennis teams were honored with Mountain West Conference awards and selections Wednesday.

Evan Urbina represented the men’s team with his selection to the All-Conference team in singles. The sophomore compiled a 23-14 overall record this year and a 5-1 record against conference opponents. Urbina ended the season with a five-match win streak.

McCall Jones garnered several honors, earning MWC Freshman of the Year and being named to the All-Conference First Team in singles and doubles. Jones, currently the No. 119 player in the country, racked up a 20-11 singles record at the No. 1 position this year. In the spring, she defeated No. 45 Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame in straight sets.

Jones and partner Kristina Doerr were also recognized with a selection to the conference team in doubles. The pair compiled a 7-3 doubles record and recorded a win over the nation’s No. 24 duo. Doerr and Jones were ranked as high as No. 69 during the spring season.

Doerr was also named to the All-MWC First Team in singles, the second consecutive year she has received that honor. The junior currently owns a 17-15 overall record and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 73 this season.

Elle Carney and Megan Price rounded out the selections for the Cougars, earning a place on the All-MWC doubles team. The Australian tandem, which spent most of the year playing at the No. 2 position for the Cougars, notched an impressive 9-1 record. Their only defeat came in a 9-8 decision against San Diego State last week.

The Mountain West Conference Tournament begins Thursday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center. The women’s team plays New Mexico while the men take on San Diego State.
