BYU Falls Short Against New Mexico

SAN -- Mountain West Conference play ended with a heartbreaking loss to No. 41 New Mexico for the No. 64 BYU men’s tennis team. The doubles made the difference for the Cougars, who dropped the 4-3 decision in San Diego Saturday.

The doubles point belonged to the Lobos who earned victories on courts one and two. Cassidy Mears and Evan Urbina were last off the court in doubles, recording an 8-1 win over their New Mexico opponents at the No. 3 position.

Mears earned the first win for the Cougars, a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ben Dunbar on court four. The contest went back-and-forth as New Mexico took matches on courts one and six and BYU took them on courts two and five. Freshman Georgy Batrakov and sophomore Urbina were among those tallying wins for the Cougars.

The match came down to Thomas Shubert at the No. 3 position. The sophomore lost the first set back came back to win the second. The score was tied in the third but Shubert eventually fell giving the Lobos the win.

BYU, now 15-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference, will take the next 10 days off before heading to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Mountain West Championships.
