BYU Shows Potential at So Cal Tournament

LOS -- The BYU men’s tennis team had a successful weekend in Los Angeles at the So Cal Intercollegiate Tournament. The squad advanced one pair to the doubles semifinals and three players to the consolation semifinals.

“I’m thrilled about our many successes here,” BYU coach Brad Pearce said. “Our players had wins over the top-ranked teams and players in the country.”

Sophomore Thomas Shubert and freshman Georgy Batrakov upset the tournament’s No. 2 seeded doubles team from UCLA to earn a spot in the semifinals before falling to USC twosome Matt Kecki and Daniel Nguyen. The No. 1 seed, also from USC, defeated sophomores Evan Urbina and A.J. Young 8-5 in the quarterfinals.

In singles play, freshman Roman Warias beat Pepperdine’s Daniel Moss 6-1, 6-3 to win the qualifying round back draw. Three out of four BYU players won their respective matches Saturday and secured a position in the semifinal round. Because of BYU policy, those matches, which were scheduled for Sunday, will not be played.

“The team convinced me that we are going to be a strong contender this year,” Pearce said.

The men’s team will be back in action to start its regular season in January.
