LOS -- Playing in its third consecutive road match, the No. 75 BYU men's tennis team gave No. 2-ranked UCLA a run for the money before falling to the Bruins in a 6-1 decision.

"I'm really proud of how our guys competed," head coach Brad Pearce said. "It was a real confidence builder for us to play as well as we did against the No. 2 team in the country."

Freshman Chip Hand had the only win for the Cougars. Hand defeated No. 18 Chris Lam in a three set match after dropping the first set and falling behind in the second. Hand posted a match score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Lam.

UCLA overpowered BYU in the doubles winning all three and taking the doubles point to start the match.

In singles, coach Pearce was impressed at the level of intensity his team demonstrated. The Cougars pushed two matches to three sets and two tiebreakers.

"I think we made them sweat a little," Pearce said. "We pushed them hard and I think our guys gained some great experience against a tough team. We look forward to Boise"
