Men Claim Third Place in MWC Tournament

PROVO -- The No. 61 and third-seeded BYU men's tennis team claimed third place in the Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday in Provo by beating fourth-seeded Air Force 4-2.

Cougars Erik Nyman and Carlos Lozano beat Eric Pittman and Tyler McClung 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while Jeff Olsen and Alonso Medina defeated Shannon Buck and Tyler West 8-3 at No. 3 to earn the doubles point for BYU.

In singles, the Falcons came back and claimed victories when Buck beat Nyman 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 and Trevor Johnson defeated Medina 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. But the Cougars fought back and won at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions to take a 3-2 lead. The match was decided in favor of BYU when Lozano beat Pittman 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in a tough three-match set at No. 2.

With the win, BYU finishes the season with a 13-9 overall record while Air Force concludes with a 21-7 record.
