1997-1998 Men's Tennis Season Summary

With just one loss at home in early March, the Cougars ended the season with an 11-7 overall record, a 3-3 record in the WAC and a 62nd final national ranking.

The BYU team had strong performances early in the year as number one player Manuel Calvo dominated the singles competition at the Fall Utah Collegiate Tournament. Calvo teamed up with Damien Ward to win the number one doubles title as well.

Las Vegas was the place for the year's Rolex Regional Championships with the Cougars having a strong showing. The dynamic number one doubles duo of Calvo/Ward had the most success, losing in the title doubles match to the 19th nationally ranked team of Morgan/Waske from San Diego State.

Dual match play began on the road for BYU with competitions in Hawai'i and southern California. Rain canceled a match with Oregon in Honolulu, and later on in the season, the rain also forced cancellation of two other matches. The Cougars were unable to play against Cal Berkeley and Weber State.

Despite the loss of their number one singles player Boris Bosnjakovic to graduation, Manuel Calvo stepped up to the challenge and finished the year with a good (16-12 .572 ) record at number one singles. Other top singles players included senior Brad McIntosh who compiled a (16-6, .727) record playing mostly the number three position. Newcomer Jeff Harbach made an immediate impact on the team tallying a 16-8, .667 record at the number five singles lineup.

Two veteran doubles teams took the lead in dual match play for the Cougars. Calvo/Ward at number one led the way with a 21-9, .700 finish. Seniors Jason Hardin and Brad McIntosh teamed up at the number two doubles position and compiled an impressive 11-7, .611 record.
