Vilms, Ward Defeated In Second Round At ITA All-American Championships
AUSTIN -- The BYU's doubles team of Gert Vilms and Damien Ward was defeated in straight sets Friday to be eliminated from competition at the ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Texas.
Vilms and Ward were defeated by K.J. Hippensteel and David Martin of Stanford, 6-2, 6-3. Hippensteel and Martin were knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round by Leif Meineke and Wesley Moodie of Boise State, 6-4, 6-4.
Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim of Stanford were the eventual champions, beating Meineke and Moodie, 6-2, 7-5 to take the title Monday morning. The win by Abrams and Kim made it a clean sweep by the Cardinal as Hippensteel won the singles tournament by defeating Brian Vahaly of Virginia, 6-1, 6-3.
The BYU men's tennis team will next participate in the Rolex Region VII Tournament Oct. 27-31, in Las Vegas.
