BYU Men's Tennis Team Swept By USC In Dual Meet
LOS -- The BYU men's tennis team was swept by No. 11 USC in a dual match at Los Angeles Wednesday.
The Cougars, who defeated UC-San Diego on Monday, lost every match to the Trojans. Four of the singles matches went only two games, with BYU's Gert Vilms forcing USC's Andrew Park, ranked No. 12 in the country, to a tie-breaker in the third set before losing in number two singles, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6). BYU's Nic Losee and USC's Nicholas Rainey also went three sets, with Rainey collecting the come-from-behind win, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
In number one singles play, senior Damien Ward of BYU was defeated by 30th-ranked Patrick Gottesleben of USC, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Trojans swept all three matches. The team of Ward and Vilms, ranked 26th in the nation, was defeated by Ryan Moore and Rainey, ranked 7th in the nation, 8-4. Losee and teammate Carlos Lozano, the No. 16 doubles team in the country, lost to Gottesleben and Daniel Langre, 8-4.
The Cougar will travel to San Diego to play San Diego State Thursday and University of San Diego on Friday. The Cougars' first home match is Feb. 11 when they host Air Force.
