BYU Loses To No. 37 Washington In Dual Meet In California

SAN JOSE -- With losses to two top-100 players in singles, the 37th-ranked BYU men's tennis team lost to its third ranked opponent in as many days when No. 31 Washington defeated the Cougars 5-2 in a match in San Jose, Calif.

The Huskies are led by a pair of freshman that are each currently ranked in the top 100 for singles play. Matt Hanlin, ranked 93rd in the country, defeated sophomore Gert Vilms in number one singles 6-3, 7-5. Washington's other ranked player, Ari Strasburg, defeated senior Damien Ward 7-6, 6-3 at number two singles.

BYU freshman Carlos Lozano defeated Andy Posavac at number three singles to win his tenth straight singles match. His last loss was Jan. 28 when he lost to Stephen Taylor of the University of San Diego.

In doubles, Ward and Vilms, ranked 9th in the nation in doubles, defeated Posavac and teammate Nick Quatrochi 8-4 in number one singles. The win improves their record to 26-9 overall.

The Cougars will finish their four-team road trip when they travel to Fresno State Saturday. The Cougars are currently 0-3 on the trip with all three losses coming to teams ranked higher than them. No. 34 California defeated BYU 5-2 Tuesday while No. 1 Stanford knocked the Cougars off 6-1 yesterday.

2. Berman/Strasburg (UW) def. Losee/Lozano, 8-6

3. Hanlin/Woolley (UW) def. Olsen/White, 9-7
