Men's Tennis Team Drops Conference Game To UNLV

After clinching the doubles point with wins at the number one and three spots, BYU's men's tennis team had a great opportunity to get a victory over the Rebels. Instead it was UNLV's Nenad Zivkovic who withstood a tough fought match from BYU's Gert Vilms at the number two singles position that gave the Rebels the 4-3 win after the two battled for nearly five hours on the court in the 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 match, Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Cougars now have a 9-7, 3-2 record on the year, with UNLV going on a 5-1 record at home.

"This was a hard fought tough match to play," said assistant coach Brad Pearce. "We had some great opportunities to win, but we just couldn't quite close the marches and playing in the wind made it tougher for us as well."

BYU's Damien Ward and Carlos Lozano won the two singles matches for the Cougars. Ward defeated Vladamier Pavicevic 6-1, 6-0 in the number one singles match with teammate Carlos Lozano defeating UNLV's Danny Erez in the number three position 6-2, 6-2.

Ward/Vilms teamed up in the number one spot in doubles for their 9-7 victory over the Rebels Zivkovic/Skorin team. Lozano and teammate Anton Rudjuk won BYU's number three spot in doubles.

The Cougars remain in Las Vegas for Saturday's next conference opponent, New Mexico. That match will be played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at 12 p.m., PST.
