Lozano Defeats No. 1 Seed at All-American Championships
PROVO -- At the 2000 Men's ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Georgia, BYU's Carlos Lozano stunned the No. 1 seeded player, Erfan Dhanjari of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2, to move on to the second round in the qualifying draw.
Sixteen players advance from a qualifying draw that starts with 64 players. Lozano will play Phillip Stolt, of Illinois, on Wednesday. If Lozano wins, he will join Gert Vilms in the main draw. The main draw includes 48 players, with 16 more that qualify from the qualifying draw. Vilms is already in the main draw.
In doubles, Vilms and Lozano are the No. 1 seed in the qualifying tournament. They defeated Henry Beam and Dan McCain, 8-6, and will play Bart Scott and Takeshi Itoh on Wednesday.
