Lozano and Vilms Advance at ITA All-American Championships

PROVO -- After winning in the first round of the doubles tournament, BYU's No. 1 seeded Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms advanced to the second round of the ITA All-American Championships, where they defeated Bart Scott and Takeshi Itoh, 8-6, at Stone Mountain, Georgia on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, they advance to the quarterfinals of the qualifying draw, which gives them an automatic berth in the main draw tournament. Lozano and Vilms will play Albano Franco and Pablo Gras, of Georgia State on Thursday evening.

After an upset of the No. 1 singles seed on Tuesday, Lozano lost to Philip Stolt, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, on Wednesday in the second round of the qualifying draw. In the main draw, Vilms lost to Nathan Overholser, of Florida, 6-2, 6-2, and then in the consolation bracket, Vilms lost to Jason Pongsrikul, of San Diego, 6-2.

Philip Stolt (Illinois) def. Carlos Lozano (BYU) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Men's Doubles Results:

Lozano/Vilms (BYU) def. Bart Scott/Takeshi Itoh 8-6

Tournament Schedule:

Lozano/Vilms will play Albano Franco/Pablo Gras (Georgia State) on Thursday at 7 p.m. EST.
