Cougars Finish California Road Trip

The BYU men's tennis team continues their tough California road trip this week with No. 13 University of Southern California and No. 12 Pepperdine on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

After dropping two matches last week to No. 3 UCLA and No. 54 San Diego, the Cougars are looking to redeem themselves with a victory.

"We are hoping to sneak out a victory against one of these top-20 teams early in the season," said men's coach Jim Osborne.

Gert Vilms had a strong showing against UCLA and USC, going 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.

The biggest upset of the weekend was when Vilms and Carlos Lozano defeatedUCLA's No. 1 doubles team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer, 8-6.

USC brings three ranked players in No. 18 Andrew Park, No. 56 Nick Rainey, and No. 96 Parker Collins. The doubles team of Rainey and Ryan Moore is ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Pepperdine brings four ranked players into the match. Al Garland is their top player at No. 19 in the nation, followed by Sebastien Graeff at No. 61, Chase Exon at No. 77, and Stefan Suter at No. 80.

The Cougars have ranked players in Carlos Lozano, at No. 73 and Gert Vilms, at No. 81. The doubles team of Lozano and Vilms are 12-2 this season.
