Cougars Dominate Utah State

PROVO -- In a performance that would be hard to beat, the BYU men's tennis team defeated Utah State, 7-0, in Provo on Thursday night.

BYU dominated from the start, when Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano defeated Andy Madersbacher and Clayton Thomas, 8-0. Jeff Harbach and Anton Rudjuk defeated Jonah Nelson and Tim Burrell, 8-5, and Michael Gysens and Eric Nyman defeated Dan Baird and Ryan Burbidge, 8-3, to win the doubles point.

"If Gert and Panda (Lozano) play as well all season as they did tonight in doubles, they could win the NCAA's," said head coach Jim Osborne. "It was a good solid team effort tonight."

In singles, the Cougars continued their great performance. Every player won in straight sets. The closest that an Aggie came to winning a set was when Madersbacher took Vilms to a 7-6 (4) set. Vilms ended up winning the set and the match.

Thursday's match was the first in a five game home stand. BYU will face Idaho State on February 15 at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.
