Cougars Play Well at Regional Tourney

Las Vegas, Nev. (October 28, 2001) - Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano led a strong showing from BYU's men's tennis team at the ITA Region VII Championships in Las Vegas. Vilms and Lozano, the preseason No. 4 doubles team in the country, advanced all the way to the final before losing to Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo of San Diego State, 8-5.

It was almost an all-BYU final as Jeff Harbach and Jeff Olsen advanced to the semi-finals, but the pair lost to Maiberger and Redondo, 8-6. It would have marked the second time Harbach and Olsen played against Vilms and Lozano in a final, as the two pairs met in the final of the BYU Invitational, with Vilms and Lozano taking that match.

Vilms led the Cougar charge in the singles competition. The No. 3 seed in the tournament, Vilms advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to No. 6 Marcus Berntson of Boise State, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Bernston lost to eventual champion Maiberger in the semi-finals in three sets.

The Cougars advanced two other players into the fourth round, but both Lozano and Anton Rudjuk lost their respective matches. Olsen advanced to the third round and Harbach and Jeremy Price lost in earlier rounds.

The Cougars have the week off, but will compete in the Rolex Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas next week.
