MWC Play Begins With a Win For Cougars
ALBUQUERQUE (April 5, 2002) ? The No. 75 BYU men?s tennis team won its third match in a row and its first match of the Mountain West Conference season, 5-2 over Air Force Friday in Albuquerque. The Cougars took the doubles point and then picked up four more singles matches to take the overall match.
In doubles play, Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms, the No. 16 team in the nation, won 8-5 at No. 1. Jeff Harbach and Jeff Olsen played together again and defeated Mancinelli/Rainey 8-6 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Lozano led the way in singles play, winning at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Nic Losee dominated Chris Zielinski at No. 3, taking the match 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Erik Nyman took three sets to win at No. 4, and Jeff Harbach won in straight sets at No. 6 to finish off the scoring for BYU.
BYU will remain in Albuquerque to play New Mexico Saturday afternoon. The Cougars will try and keep their current winning streak alive, and stay undefeated in MWC play.
