BYU Two-For-Two in MWC, Cougars Knock Off Lobos
ALBUQUERQUE (April 6, 2002) ? The No. 75 BYU men?s tennis team picked up its second straight win over a Mountain West Conference opponent by defeating New Mexico Saturday, 6-1. The Cougars are now 2-0 in the MWC and have a three-match winning streak.
BYU took the doubles point in thrilling fashion, with Nic Losee and Erik Nyman clinching the point in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (6), at No. 2. The No. 16 pair of Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms won handily at No. 1, 8-5, to give the Cougars one point to start the match off.
BYU dominated singles play, although there were a few tight matches. Lozano narrowly lost to the No. 125 player in the nation, Divian Coetzee, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Cougars won the rest of the matches though, with Jeff Olsen?s three-set match at No. 5 clinching the victory. Vilms won at No. 2 in a third-set tiebreaker, while Erik Nyman and Nic Losee won each of their matches in straight sets. Jeff Harbach concluded the scoring by taking his match at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.
BYU will finish the MWC season almost as quickly as it began, with three matches in three days beginning Thursday. The Cougars will take on Utah, UNLV and San Diego State Thursday, Friday and Saturday, respectively, and all the matches will take place in Salt Lake City.
