TEMPE, Ariz. – BYU men’s tennis sophomore Wally Thayne has entered the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings sponsored by Tennis-Point with a No. 123 national singles ranking. Thayne moved into the rankings after a 2-0 performance last week that included ranked wins over the No. 5 and No. 69 players in the country.

Thayne’s win over Stanford’s No. 5 Nishesh Basavareddy is the biggest ranked win in program history since at least 1997 when digital records began. He becomes the first Cougar since 2021 to be ranked and is just the third to earn the accomplishment in the last 10 years.

Thayne is now 2-2 in singles this season versus opponents in this week’s rankings. The ITA uses a computer algorithm to compile the rankings, with the formula weighing quality wins against other factors like losses and total matches played.

BYU has five regular season matches remaining in the 2023 season, including three at home. The Cougars host San Francisco this Friday, April 7, and Santa Clara on Saturday, April 8.
