BYU sweeps WCC men’s tennis Players of the Week
SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU’s Dominik Jakovljevic the WCC men’s tennis Singles Player of the Week, with fellow Cougars Jack Barnett and Mateo Vereau taking home Doubles Team of the Week honors.
BYU went 2-0 in dual match play last week after wins over Weber State and Saint Mary’s. Jakovljevic and the doubles pair of Barnett and Vereau were undefeated in those matches.
Jakovljevic played up in the lineup in both matches due to injuries. Against Weber State he played up two spots and won at No. 3 singles, earning a straight-set 6-4, 7-5 victory over WSU’s Connor Kruger. That win also clinched the dual match for the Cougars. Jakovljevic then followed up that performance with a quick 6-4, 6-2 result at No. 4 singles against Caelan Potts from Saint Mary’s.
Barnett and Vereau’s matches last week at the No. 2 spot were the first time the duo played together this season. Their 7-6 (5) win versus Weber State’s Tristan Sarap and Jordan Coutinho clinched the doubles point in that match. A 7-5 victory against SMC’s Potts and Diego Jarry was BYU’s first doubles win over Saint Mary’s, with the Cougars ultimately taking the doubles point in that match as well.
BYU’s next match is at Boise State this Saturday, Feb. 25, at 12:00 p.m. MST.
