SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU’s Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs the Doubles Team of the Week after the duo’s 6-3 No. 1 doubles win on Friday.
Thayne and Fuchs defeated Cal Poly’s Joe Leather and Bastiaan Weststrate. The Cal Poly side was 1-1 before the match, having previously defeated Arkansas’ No. 1 doubles team and losing to No. 14 Michigan’s top pair.
Friday’s match was Thayne and Fuchs’ first win of the season after their only other match went unfinished. The Cougars took an early 4-2 advantage against Cal Poly after Fuchs came up from the back to hit a winner between Leather and Weststrate, with Thayne later sealing the match on an overhead slam after he and Fuchs continued to hold their serves.
The sophomores, who trained together near their homes in California before coming to BYU, are 6-5 together all-time for the Cougars.
BYU concludes its home stand on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 11:00 a.m. MST against New Mexico. The Cougars then visit Utah State on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 12:00 p.m.
